Professional Indemnity Insurance (UK)
Introduction
If you provide expert advice or offer a specialist service, such as design, in the course of your business, you need Professional Indemnity Insurance. In fact, some employers, such as government bodies, will not let you work for them without it.
What is a Profession?
Historically, the "Professions" were confined to solicitors, surveyors, architects and the like. Remember when the only consultants were in hospitals? Now they are in Management, IT, Human Resources and many other fields, each profession carrying with it its own risks. In the modern world there are many more areas of specialism and technical expertise and, therefore, many more people offering services or advice upon which their clients rely for their own livelihood. Cover available
Generally speaking, the purpose of Professional Indemnity Insurance is to protect you from the financial consequences of such a breach of duty arising from any neglect, error or omission in the conduct of your professional duties.
The premium will depend on, amongst other things, the limit of indemnity required. We recommend £250,000 as an absolute minimum although much higher limits may be available or desirable. In addition, cover can be provided for directors' and officers' liability; previous companies or partnerships; libel & slander; loss of documents; fidelity; infringement of copyright; dishonesty of employees; and unintentional breach of confidence. The insurers that we use will consider your case on its own merits and tailor the policy to meet your individual requirements.
